Becks New Endeavor
The spotlight this week was shone upon British footballer/model/sexual-icon, David Beckham, and his shocking signing of a five-year deal with the U.S. side Los Angeles Galaxy worth approximately $250 million dollars. On Wednesday, the former England captain was originally denied a renewal of contract with La Liga giant Real Madrid, resulting in an all out media frenzy, speculating the 31-year-old's next move.
With Beckham coming state side, many believe that he will be the spark needed to get Major League Soccer onto its feet. However, I believe that idea will be shortly lived and will die after a season, two the most. Let's be realistic, diehard soccer fans will tell you that the most competitive and entertaining soccer is played overseas whether it's in England, Spain, Germany, France, etc. After all, soccer is the most played sport and heavily followed in the world. (excluding the U.S., of course) So you can scratch off, the diehards from jumping ship.
Now let us break down the majority of Beckham's fanbase. Women... Young and old, pretty and fat. One legged or two legged. It's a given that most of the seats at the Home Depot Center will be filled with 75% women, 15% kids, and 10% fanboys. When women realize that Becks is "playing" in a high-paced soccer game and not modeling with his shirt off for the cover of GQ, then ticket sales will slowly, but surely continue to decrease.
Don't get me wrong; David Beckham is an extremely talented footballer. He will have an immediate impact in the MLS. But how does MLS believe they'll grow by signing an aging, outcast, has been? Becks was dropped from the English world team when Steve McClaren was named the new manager and Fabio Capello benched Becks for a majority of the LFP season and announced yesterday he will be benched for the remainder of it. You want to make MLS successful? Try signing Cristiano Ronaldo to a multi-year deal. Bring over Ronaldinho. Develop the youth and make a quest to win the World Cup. Don't let Freddy Adu leave to Man U. Don't look for a quick fix.
Does Major League Soccer not think Beck's won't be distracted living in HOLLYWOOD of all places? LMAO!
Yeah, I'm done...
